“Tahiti’s most famous and original excursion into the volcanic bowels of the island. The climb begins in a 4×4 vehicle on a private estate, and takes around 40 minutes.
A short 15-minute approach walk through the escape route takes us directly to the entrance of the 3rd lavatube. We then enter the lavatube, cross it and exit via the second path, then climb the ridge to reach the 1st 22m abseil.
After descending this first abseil, we enter the lavatubes with our headlamps in the dark to make the 4 other abseils (6,8,8,12), the two de-escalated passages, and the optional, non-compulsory jump.
We’ll eat at the entrance to the 3rd lavatube of the morning, then take the same exit route back to our car.
Please note: you don’t need to be claustrophobic or suffer from vertigo to enjoy this canyon outing.
